H.E.A.L. (Honour Elevate And Love) Her Podcast
I'm Makini Smith!
After going through a divorce, my sister passing away, experiencing narcissistic abuse, and some significant health scares, I realized through sharing my story that I wasn't alone in my suffering...suffering; subjective distress generated by the experience of being out of balance.
In a deep dive to holistically heal mind, body and soul, is where I discovered peace, clarity and connection.
It is impossible to be truly wise without some real-life hardship. And we cannot develop post-traumatic wisdom without making it through and, most importantly, through it together.
Social connection builds resilience, and resilience helps create post-traumatic wisdom, and that wisdom leads to hope. Hope for you and others witnessing and participating in your healing and for your community.
A healthy community is a healing community, and a healing community is full of hope because it has seen its own people weather--survive and thrive.

Angie Martinez highlights the significance of alternative healing methods such as meditation, Reiki, energy healing, and manifestation in her personal growth and spiritual journey. She delves into the impact of childhood attachment experiences on adult relationships, elucidating different attachment styles—anxious, avoidant, disorganized, and secure—and their influence on one's relational dynamics. Angie underscores that one does not need to be fully secure to cultivate a healthy relationship; having a secure partner can facilitate personal growth and security. Emphasizing self-love and self-respect, Angela encourages individuals, especially women, to align their behaviours with personal values to foster secure relationships. Angie views sabotaging behaviours as signals of unmet needs, advocating for self-awareness and adaptive coping mechanisms, and uses meditation and EFT tapping to realign with her true self based on her human design.
Key Takeaways:
- Understanding attachment styles, such as anxious, avoidant, disorganized, and secure, can provide insights into relationships.- Transitioning from anxious attachment styles to secure ones within relationships can be accelerated by being with a secure partner.- Enhancing security within relationships involves self-discovery, self-respect, and aligning behaviours with personal values.- Sabotaging behaviours can indicate unmet needs and offer opportunities for growth and self-awareness.- Recognizing when one is out of alignment based on human design and frustration level can help realign with true self through meditation and EFT tapping.Self-awareness and proactive approaches are key to addressing overwhelm and lack of focus by tuning into one's body and emotions.

Breanna Chanelle Phillip "Culturally Relevant Therapy"
Thursday Jun 13, 2024
Thursday Jun 13, 2024
Makini and Breanna emphasize the crucial need for representation in therapy for Black individuals, driven by their personal experiences and the stigmatization of mental health within their communities. They discuss the common challenges faced by Black clients, including undiagnosed learning differences and the impact of generational trauma, and stress the importance of early intervention and validation.
Both women highlight the normalization of various forms of trauma in Black communities, exacerbated by historical factors like colonization and slavery, and advocate for culturally relevant therapeutic services to promote healing. The importance of creating a supportive environment for abuse survivors and breaking down the stigma around mental health is underscored, with a focus on the healing power of storytelling and social connection.
Additionally, Breanna challenges the idea of predisposed health issues in the Black community by linking them to historical trauma and social constructs, advocating for addressing these root causes through education and therapy.
Breanna Chanelle Phillip is a dedicated and passionate registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist of Grenadian descent with almost a decade of experience working with youth and their families in various capacities. Breanna is experienced in advocating for and with Black youth and families as they navigate systems with histories deeply rooted in anti-Black racism and oppression.
As the owner of Breanna Chanelle Therapeutic Services, Breanna prioritizes the mental and emotional wellness of Black individuals, families and communities by offering culturally relevant therapeutic services and programs that address the unique mental wellness challenges within Black communities. She’s been seen on TVO, City News, Toronto Star and more.
Key Takeaways:
- The lack of representation in therapy for Black people led to a desire to become a therapist- Normalized traumatic experiences in the Black community include emotional, sexual, physical, and spiritual abuse- Prioritizing mental and emotional wellness in Black communities through culturally relevant therapy is crucial- Support for abuse survivors is essential, emphasizing the need for a supportive environment and the healing power of storytelling- Expressing emotions and seeking therapy are important for overcoming trauma and achieving healing- Historical trauma and social constructs impact health disparities within the Black community
